If you plan on sipping an ice-cold drink out of a coconut this summer, this one’s for you. The island aesthetic—palm trees, bold florals, and open-weave knits—is taking over this summer, but it’s not only relegated to vacation. Tropical dresses, while great for any upcoming visits you have planned to a white-sand beach, also happen to embrace a bold summer vibe that works just as well for occasions at home. And thanks to brands like Louisa Ballou and Johanna Ortiz that create collections focused specifically on vacationwear, it’s easy to find the look that’s right for the type of trip you consider ideal—whether it’s beachside with a mai tai or turning it up on the dance floor. When it comes to a dress fitting for a trip somewhere close to the equator, there are a few key conditions to keep in mind. Firstly, you want lightweight materials—mesh, cotton, and linen—that will stop you from getting sweaty, even in the most humid of locales. You’ll also want to consider roomier silhouettes (perhaps even a caftan) that don’t hug so snugly to the skin, ideal for throwing on over a swimsuit or dressing up for a formal beachside occasion. Lastly, playing into the aesthetic means embracing the tropical vibe by way of bold prints and colors. This summer you won’t be playing it safe. Ahead, shop six tropical-dress styles to help you embrace the aesthetic, whether you’re on island time or still sticking to your city schedule.
At the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, a new show draws parallels between fashion designers Christian Dior and Cristóbal Balenciaga. On view are approximately 65 garments sourced from FIT’s permanent collection, offering an intimate look at the visual and actual relationships between the designers and their legacies. Those nostalgic for couture’s golden age will not want to miss the exhibition. Getting dressed for the occasion is easy: Opt for Balenciaga and Dior, of course. An example of a winning costume, below. Those missing the palm trees just north of Manhattan’s Canal Street (brought in by Tulum hot spot Gitano for the past several summers) will be delighted to know they have been relocated to Governors Island, the isle just south of the city’s financial district. Gitano Island, a 27,000-foot indoor-outdoor space with sand underfoot and, yes, a disco ball overhead, will serve up the same Mexican bites and mezcal cocktails for which it’s well known. Plus, there will be DJ tunes (a night at Gitano ends on the dance floor, after all) and views of Manhattan’s skyline. Visit the new restaurant wearing something vacation-ready. Amur’s palm-tree-printed dress will look just right; pair it with some bamboo-accented accessories: a cane bag by J.W. Pei and some bamboo-buckle Gucci sandals. Finish it all off with Juvee Sun tortoiseshell specs from Garrett Leight for that perfect I’m-on-holiday look.
The beauties of the natural world and the precision of origami collide in the exhibition “Origami in the Garden,” on view now at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Scattered throughout the gardens are 18 installations featuring almost 70 metal sculptures inspired by the Japanese art of folding paper, all designed by Santa Fe–based artists Jennifer and Kevin Box. You’re probably going to take lots of photos during your visit, so you might as well ensure your ensemble is photogenic—and perhaps inspired by the pleats and folds of the artform? Start with Cecilie Bahnsen’s darling white dress and pair it with origami-bird-inspired dangly earrings. Coperni’s folded-leather black purse hits all the right notes, as does a pair of ruched-leather slides from Vince.
